Experienced football administrator, Kofi Manu insists that the incumbent president of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku should not be a beneficiary of the presidential term limit extension.
The domestic football governing (GFA) officially extended the presidential term limit from two to three terms, following a decisive vote at the 31st Ordinary Congress held in Pampram on Tuesday.
Out of 123 delegates who participated in the vote, 114 supported the amendment, while six opposed it, with three abstaining. This move alters the 2019 GFA statutes, which previously capped the presidency at two four-year terms.
In an interview, Kofi Manu emphasized Okraku is entitled to only two terms as GFA president, having assumed office based on the existing status.
“You don’t make a law to take a retrospective effect and for that reason, since Kurt Okraku took office based on the existing status that had two terms, he cannot benefit from any extension” he said.
Kurt Okraku assumed office as president of the Ghana FA in 2019, with his mandate expected to expire in 2027.
Meanwhile, it is unknown whether Okraku, who double as the second vice president of CAF will contest for a third term, when his mandate expires.
