VfB Stuttgart have kicked off their preseason with a clear message: they’re not giving up on Justin Diehl.
Despite the 20-year-old winger suffering another injury setback, the club is sticking by him, taking him along to their summer training camp.
Diehl, who joined from FC Koln, picked up a ligament injury in his ankle during the 7-1 win over SV Fellbach. It’s the latest in a string of fitness issues that have kept the German-Ghanaian talent from building momentum.
But Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeneà remains optimistic. “He's going to the training camp because he simply got through it well,” said HoeneÃ, hinting that the young winger could rejoin parts of team training soon. Progress in rehab has been positive, with Diehl gradually edging back into the squad setup.
His return for friendlies against Toulouse on August 2 or Bologna on August 9 is still uncertain. With his injury history, Stuttgart are likely to tread carefully.
