The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations provided regarding the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars.
The 49-year-old coach has faced intense criticism following Ghanas failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the first time in two decades the team has missed out on the tournament. The Black Stars finished at the bottom of Group F, securing just three points from three defeats and three draws.
Despite widespread calls for his dismissal, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has opted to keep Addo in charge while making changes to the technical team. However, Minister Adams insists he will further investigate the rationale behind this decision, as the responses he has received so far have not been satisfactory.
One wonders why Otto Addo was retained as head coach of the Black Stars considering all the scorecards that we have all seen, he told Woezor TV.Everyone is wondering what informed his retention and what informed the firing of his assistant coaches and other persons but he alone was kept and I have not received satisfactory answers.Maybe when I meet the GFA officially and now that I am the Minister of Sports and Recreation, they may be able to tell me why.So we will see if the reasons are convincing enough and whether it assures us of a strong technical bench that can handle the very good talent and skilful players we have to be able to give us the wins we need to qualify us for the World Cup because our none participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) must not happen again, he added. In an effort to strengthen the squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, the GFA has appointed German coach Winfried Schfer as the Black Stars' technical advisor and the GFAs technical director.
Other additions to the technical setup include Desmond Ofei, while John Paintsil and Fatau Dauda will continue as second assistant coach and goalkeepers' trainer, respectively. Kris Perquy has been brought in as the team psychologist, with Gregory De Grauwe serving as the video analyst.
