Patrick Agyemang shares how Mauricio Pochettino eased his nerves during first USMNT camp
Charlotte FC forward Patrick Agyemang has revealed how USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino helped ease his nerves during his first-ever call-up to the national team's January training camp. The camp, held in Florida, has historically been a crucial stepping stone for players aiming to secure a spot in the World Cup squad, with 30 players since 1999 making their debut or second appearance during this period and later being selected for the FIFA World Cup.Agyemang, who has Ghanaian heritage, initially felt overwhelmed by the prospect of working with Pochettino, a coach he had watched leading top players like Messi and Mbappe in the Champions League. When I got there, I was so nervous, Agyemang recalled in an interview with Flashscore. It felt like a dream. However, Pochettino's approach quickly put Agyemang at ease. The coach emphasized trust in the players' abilities, encouraging them to showcase their talents without over-coaching.He told us we know how to play the game. He encouraged us to show our talents, Agyemang explained. He mentioned he will never coach us how to play but he will put us in positions to hopefully bring us success.Pochettino's philosophy of enjoying the game while maintaining focus on defensive duties resonated with Agyemang. He said: 'Just go and have fun. Do what you know already and that's to play, but, obviously, focus on your defensive duties. Focus on working hard, but going forward, have fun', the young forward recounted.
