IGP, GFA, and clubs collaborate to strengthen stadium security
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo-Dampare, has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Services commitment to enhancing security at football stadiums following recent incidents of violence.In a high-level meeting with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and Premier League clubs, the IGP outlined key measures to curb stadium violence.The discussion was triggered by the tragic death of Yaw Frimpong, an Asante Kotoko supporter, during a league match against Nsoatreman FC.Dr Akuffo-Dampare emphasized the need for better coordination between the police and football authorities, leading to the approval of 33 key actions for implementation.Among the measures announced are the appointment of Sports Security Officers in all 16 regions, the creation of a Sports Policing Unit, and the inclusion of sports policing in police training programs. Additionally, intelligence officers will be deployed around teams, and fan education programs will be intensified to foster a safer football culture.The IGP assured stakeholders of the polices commitment to ensuring justice for Frimpongs family while making football stadiums safer for all.The GFA will hold further discussions with Premier League clubs on February 6 to build on these interventions.
