Alhaji Akambi calls for selected venues after Asante Kotoko fanâ??s tragic death
Former Hearts of Oak board member, Alhaji Brimah Akambi, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to consider restricting Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches to select venues in an effort to curb hooliganism. His comments follow the tragic events at Nana Amoah Koramansah II Park during the match-day 19 clash between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko, which turned violent and led to the death of a Kotoko supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley. The game witnessed heated confrontations between players from both teams, escalating into a full-blown brawl involving fans. The violence continued off the pitch, ultimately resulting in the fatal stabbing of the devoted Kotoko fan. Three individuals, including Nsoatreman FC bankroller Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, are currently in police custody. In an interview, Akambi stressed that not all stadiums are safe for hosting matches, proposing that games be limited to a few approved venues. Why do we play football under duress? Nobody should accept it, and this one I will blame on ourselves. We decided on making the Ghana Premier League autonomous three years ago, Akambi said.We could have chosen five stadia to host games. Not every stadium is suitable for hosting games. This could have avoided something like the demise of the fan.
