Even Al Ahly has over 35 backroom staff - GFA chief Frederick Acheampong defends newly assembled Black Stars technical team
[caption id=attachment_1169752 align=alignnone width=600] Frederick Acheampong[/caption]Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong has defended the recent decision to enhance the backroom staff for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.The GFA has appointed Winfried Schfer as technical advisor to the Black Stars, while also serving as the technical director of the Football Association.In addition, Desmond Offei, the current head coach of the Black Satellites, has been promoted to the Black Stars' technical bench as an assistant coach, replacing German Joseph Laumann.Offei will work alongside existing assistants John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who will continue in their roles under head coach Otto Addo.Kris Perquy will join the team as the psychologist, and Gregory De Grauwe will serve as the video analyst. These changes follow the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, marking the first time in two decades they missed out.The new technical team now consists of 15 personnel, with Otto Addo remaining as head coach.Acheampong, in defending the decision, highlighted that even top clubs like Al Ahly have over 35 backroom staff.I was in Cairo for a CAF program and I was shocked to find out that Al Ahly has over 35 backroom staff, he told Asempa FM.With the backroom staff of the Black Stars, we should support them and I know they will come good, he added.Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Recreation has indicated that the new technical team will undergo a review. The Black Stars are set to face Chad and Madagascar in the upcoming qualifiers in March.
