CAF security expert Nick Owusu calls for stronger measures to curb hooliganism
[caption id=attachment_1221290 align=alignnone width=2048] Nana Kromansah Park in Nsoatre[/caption]CAF stadium security expert Nick Owusu has voiced his disappointment over Ghanas failure to address hooliganism in football, describing the recurring incidents as avoidable.His remarks follow the tragic death of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong during a Premier League match against Nsoatreman in Nsoatre on February 2.The incident adds to a growing list of violent episodes in Ghanas top flight, including assaults on Real Tamale United and Coach Maxwell Konadu, who was attacked in 2023.Speaking to JoySports, Owusu stressed the need for a structured security approach.There are certain steps that need to be taken as a country, and we are not taking those steps, he said.He highlighted the importance of trained security coordinators at match venues.If you typically have a safety and security coordinator on the ground two or three days before a match, they would gather intelligence, coordinate with police, provide team escorts, and create safe zones within the stadium, he explained.In response, the Ghana Football Association has suspended league matches, while Kotoko has withdrawn from the competition until justice is served.The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, has since engaged the GFA on measures to curb hooliganism.
