A total of 7,870 students have graduated with various degrees from the University for Development Studies (UDS) during its 26th congregation held in Tamale.
Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, Vice-Chancellor of UDS, speaking during the ceremony on Saturday, November 29, said the congregation marked not only the end of an academic journey for the graduands but also the beginning of their responsibility as nation-builders equipped with skills, integrity and a strong spirit of service.
He said, “This is not merely a ceremony marked by academic tradition; it is a powerful moment of transformation where years of sacrifice meet the promise of tomorrow.”
Professor Al-Hassan said the graduating cohort comprised 4,396 males representing 56 per cent, and 3,474 females representing 44 per cent.
He described the figures as evidence of the University’s steady progress in narrowing the gender gap through deliberate policies, scholarships, mentorship programmes and safe-campus initiatives.
Professor Al-Hassan hinted that UDS had maintained its position as Ghana’s top-ranking university in Quality Teaching and second in International Outlook according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
He highlighted the University’s continued global visibility, citing the male football team’s status as reigning world university football champions following their historic triumph in Dalian, China and UDS’ participation as the only Ghanaian university invited to the University Presidents Forum in China.
He mentioned that the University’s Directorate of Internal Audit had also received a top award for Enterprise Risk Management Compliance among tertiary institutions at the Annual Internal Audit Conference organized by the Internal Audit Agency.
Professor Al-Hassan said significant progress had been made in expanding infrastructure across the campuses, emphasizing that “On the Tamale Campus, new facilities including a Nursing and Midwifery block, a twin auditorium, and parts of a science laboratory complex had already been opened for academic use easing pressure on lecture halls and office space.”
He added that “At Nyankpala, a 500-bed student hostel supported by the Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme was progressing steadily.”
Professor Al-Hassan urged the graduands to uphold integrity, compassion and adaptability, and to carry the UDS spirit of service into their communities and workplaces.
Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, whose speech was read on his behalf by Mr Abdulai Imoro Gong, Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, commended UDS for its transformative role in expanding access to higher education in northern Ghana and contributing significantly to socio-economic development.
Miss Victoria Boamah, the valedictorian of the congregation, expressed gratitude to the University, parents, and guardians for their sacrifices and support, and pledged that the graduates would put their knowledge and skills to use in service of society.
