The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has explained that the bail conditions imposed by EOCO on individuals or former government appointees are based on the magnitude of the alleged crimes committed.
Dr Ayine was responding to a question from Mr Habib Iddrisu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tolon, who raised concerns over what he described as “excessive bail conditions” placed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on some former government officials.
The Minister stressed that the bail requirements fall squarely within the laws of Ghana.
Dr Ayine noted that suspects who consider the bail conditions too stringent had the right to approach the courts to seek a downward review.
According to him, the bail conditions are necessary to ensure that accused persons do not abscond and remain within the jurisdiction to stand trial.
Several former government appointees are currently facing prosecution for alleged financial infractions, with EOCO spearheading investigations and enforcement of bail requirements.
