Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the Juaben Municipality has been equipped with in-depth knowledge of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) pivotal role in Ghana’s battle against corruption.
The day’s workshop formed part of a nationwide campaign to enhance public awareness of anti-corruption legislation and reporting systems.
Implemented under the “Strengthening the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption” initiative, the workshop was put together by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) with funding from the European Union, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.
Mrs Beauty Emefa Narteh, GACC Executive Secretary, told participants that the project aimed to enable ordinary Ghanaians to identify and report corrupt practices.
“Corruption drains the public treasury, leaving scant resources for development, every citizen must join the fight, “she stressed.
She linked rising unemployment to increased corrupt behaviour and urged targeted education for young people on the societal damage caused by graft.
The rollout covers 60 districts in all 16 regions to boost civic involvement in promoting transparency and accountability.
Mrs Narteh called on citizens even in the remotest areas, to utilise official channels for exposing wrongdoing.
“It is a collective national responsibility, not the burden of a single person,” she declared.
She warned against normalising corruption through excuses tied to personal hardship, noting that, individuals in authority often exploited their positions for private gain.
Citizens, she added, must decide the kind of governance they desire and actively support anti-corruption efforts.
Mrs Narteh clarified that the OSP had jurisdiction over all individuals and entities: public officials, politically exposed persons, private citizens, and corporate bodies.
Participants learned that the OSP investigates and prosecutes cases, recovers illegal assets, and designs preventive strategies.
Nana Osei Busumuru, Apagyahene of Juaben, blamed political interference for the nation’s corruption woes, saying it had undermined progress.
He praised the OSP as a vital weapon against graft and appealed for regional offices to enable swift intervention whenever corruption surfaces.
