The Reverend Dr Nana Opare Kwakye, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) and Chancellor of the Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG) has appealed to government for stronger support for private universities.
He said the inclusion of private universities in national education mechanisms would greatly enhance the contribution of private universities to national development.
“Private universities complement the efforts of the public sector in human capital development and therefore support in the form of grants, tax reliefs, infrastructure assistance and inclusion in national education mechanisms will greatly enhance their contribution.”
Addressing the 19th Congregation of the PUG, at Abetifi, where over 800 graduated from different faculties and disciplines, Rev Dr Opare Kwakye emphasized that the Church remained one of the greatest contributors to national development through its long-standing investments in education at all levels.
The Chancellor of the University announced that accreditation had been obtained for five new programmes namely M.Sc. Cyber Security, MBA Human Resource and Development, M.Sc. Organizational Leadership and Management, M.Sc. Strategic Management and Corporate Strategy and M.Sc. Project Planning and Management.
These new prgrammes, he noted, would not only enhance the academic portfolio but also equip the students with the relevant skills for the job market adding that two new lecture halls and a Skills laboratory for the Midwifery progromme would be commissioned soon.
Rev Dr Opare Kwakye highlighted the feat of the University’s faculty of Law where about 50 of its alumni had been called to the Ghana Bar in the last three years, demonstrating the remarkable achievement and high academic standards.
He urged the graduands to be guided by the core values of the University, excellence, integrity, discipline and commitment and faith in God since their education was not just about acquiring degrees.
The PCG since the arrival of the Basel Missionaries in 1828, played a primary role in the development of formal education and is credited with over 2000 schools across the country from basic through to tertiary institutions.
Over 800 students from 12 academic programmes were graduated with 119 earning First Class, 424 graduated with Second Class Upper whiles 260 earned Second Class Lower and 11 with Third Class in Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Education, BSc International Development and BSc. Computer Engineering among others.
Professor John Ofosu-Anim, Vice Chancellor of the PUG, said the challenges we faced as a nation in healthcare, governance, technology and many other spheres demanded not fleeting interest but deep unwavering commitment full of integrity.
He therefore urged the graduands from the various disciplines to be the architects of national conscience by exhibiting the core values of the University, namely Excellence, Commitment, Integrity, Discipline and Faith in God to make a difference in the world of work.
