What began as an ordinary Thursday afternoon at the bustling China Mall at Santasi turned into a scene of heartbreak and disbelief, as a raging fire swept through the newly opened retail center, reducing millions of cedis’ worth of goods to ashes.
Thick plumes of smoke rose high above the Santasi skyline, darkening the afternoon sky and drawing hundreds of stunned residents to the scene.
Workers and shoppers stood helpless as the flames devoured the building that had only recently become a symbol of business growth and modern retail in Kumasi.
The fire, which reportedly started in the warehouse section of the mall, spread rapidly through stacks of imported goods, electronics, furniture, clothing, and household appliances.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene with several fire tenders from across Kumasi.
They fought fiercely to contain the blaze, battling intense heat, exploding items, and limited access to parts of the building.
Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Henry Giwah, said firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to bring the situation under control.

“It has been a tough battle. The fire spread very quickly because of the materials inside, but our men are doing their best to prevent further destruction,” he said.
Officials from National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Police Service were also on site to assist with the emergency response and to manage the heavy traffic caused by the incident along the busy Santasi–Obuasi road.
The China Mall, which opened just a few months ago, had quickly become a major shopping destination for residents of Kumasi and nearby towns.
Its destruction marks a painful setback not only for the business operators but also for the city’s growing commercial landscape.
