Miss Harriet Oteng, a Principal Certified Registered Anaesthetist, has been honoured by the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA), following a Ghana News Agency publication that highlighted her humanitarian act of saving a pregnant woman at the Ada Kasseh Market.
Miss Oteng made headlines when she swiftly came to the aid of a pregnant woman, Madam Grace Siawu, who collapsed at the market.
She resuscitated her, ensured her safety, and personally transported her to a hospital, where Madam Siawu delivered a healthy baby boy the same day.
The story, which went viral after its publication by the GNA, attracted widespread admiration within the health sector and among the public, prompting the GACRA to formally recognise Miss Oteng during its 7th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Session held in Sunyani in the Bono Region from October 14 to 17, 2025.
Speaking to the GNA after receiving her citation, Miss Oteng said she was overwhelmed with emotion, adding that the recognition came as a surprise.
“I was full of mixed feelings because I least expected it,” she said.
She noted that the Bono Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Kofi Amo-Kodieh, commended her during the event, expressing his amazement that there were still health professionals who served with such compassion and humanity.
Miss Oteng said this was her first public recognition in her 13 years of practice as an anaesthetist and expressed gratitude to the executives of GACRA, especially the Public Relations Officer, for their thoughtfulness and effort in honouring her.
“I did what I did purely out of humanity, not for recognition. But this gesture encourages me to continue serving with love and dedication,” she said.
She urged health workers to always avail themselves to help others and to uphold professionalism and empathy wherever they found themselves.
Miss Oteng described the recognition as a reminder that kindness still mattered in healthcare and that saving lives often extended beyond the hospital walls.
