The government has expressed profound appreciation to the chiefs and youth of Sikaman and Brofoyedru communities for their swift and patriotic response during the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent personalities.
A delegation led by the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was tasked by President John Dramani Mahama to honour the efforts of the people and convey the government’s gratitude.
The delegation visited Adansi Akrofrom, where they met with traditional leaders, youth groups, and residents.
Mr Asiedu Nketia commended the bravery and unity demonstrated by the youth and reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining in the area.
He emphasised the need for sustainable and responsible mining practices to protect the environment and ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
As part of its support, the government announced several intervention packages for the affected communities, including GH¢100,000 for the youth who participated in rescue efforts and GH¢20,000 for traditional authorities to perform outstanding customary rites.
Others are the completion of the area’s road network in memory of the victims, assistance to complete community centres in Brofoyedru and Sikaman and recruitment of local youth into sustainable employment opportunities, including teaching, farming, and the security services
Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, also expressed deep gratitude to the residents for their patriotism and support during the tragedy.
Nana Omono Asamoah Agyei, Adokwaihene and representative of the Adansihene, called on the government to erect a monument in memory of the victims, which he suggested could also serve as a tourist attraction.
He further appealed for improved social amenities and infrastructure to uplift the living standards of residents.
