Economic difficulties nationwide caused my defeat – Amewu

Mr John-Peter Amewu, outgoing Hohoe Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) and Railway Development Minister, has said the nationwide economic difficulties had caused his defeat in the 2024 parliamentary elections in the constituency.

Mr Amewu, who secured 14,971 votes, lost the Seat to Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 31,163 votes.

Mr Amewu, interacting with the media after delivering a heartfelt message to constituents, said the electorates in Hohoe just voted in tandem with the nationwide line of voting against the economic situation.

“What happens in Ghana, which affected me; you realise the economic difficulties and so the election was about Ghana and not about Hohoe.”

He said he called Mr Tsekpo and congratulated him on his victory, adding that he was ready to offer his support for the development of the constituency.

Mr Amewu said he would continue to work to develop Hohoe even in private life, adding that Mr Tsekpo’s vision to push Hohoe to the next level was in-line with his (Amewu) agenda and would support him to succeed.

He said all the opportunities at his disposal were used to affect lives and even in private life, he would continue to support individuals within the constituency to achieve their desires.

Mr Amewu said other constituencies in the Volta Region were not developing because of no competition between political parties.

“Hohoe today has become an icon to every citizen across the world due to what has been achieved, and I believe Mr Tsekpo would follow suit.”

Mr Amewu said although the results of the elections did not go in their favour, his vision and determination remained unchanged for the Constituency.

He said he remained committed to the development, accountability and opportunities for constituents.

Mr Amewu called for support for the MP-elect, adding that all must be United and rally behind him urging constituents not to allow political parties divide them.

He said he had plans to build a recording studio to support local artists to help them develop their music careers.

Mr Amewu expressed gratitude to all who rallied behind and supported him.
