A 49-year-old trailer driver, Clement Ofori, has been remanded into police custody by the Tafo Circuit Court following a horrific accident at Krofrom in the Ashanti Region that claimed the life of a 20-year-old pillion rider and injured several others.
Ofori was driving a DAF trailer truck with registration number GR 5404-13, carrying a 40-foot container loaded with transit goods from Tema to Burkina Faso, when the vehicle allegedly developed a brake fault while descending towards Tafo-Nhyiaeso.
The prosecution told the court that the brake failure made it difficult for Ofori to control the heavy-duty vehicle, causing it to crash into six vehicles, a tricycle and a motorbike on both lanes of the road.
The truck also reportedly rammed into and damaged some roadside stores, leaving several people injured.
The deceased has been identified as Atta Junior, a 20-year-old pillion rider who was on the motorbike when the crash occurred.
Several other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.
The body of Atta Junior was deposited at the Tafo Ebenezer Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.
Driver Arraigned
Ofori was arrested by personnel of the Tafo-Pakrono Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and arraigned before the Tafo Circuit Court on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The prosecution told the court that investigations were ongoing and requested additional time to enable the police to gather more information on the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Presiding over the case, His Honour Festus Fovi Nukunu remanded Ofori into police custody to reappear on September 25, 2026.
DVLA Joins Probe
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE after the proceedings, the Tafo-Pakrono Divisional MTTD Commander, ASP Paul Ayaaba Asore, disclosed that the police had engaged technical officers from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to assist with the investigation.
He said the DVLA officers would help examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and provide technical assistance to the police as investigations continue.
ASP Asore added that the injured victims remained on admission at the hospitals and were responding to treatment.
