The interconnectivity between nations of the world is a fact which should not be lost on us.
The reality of climate change, as it is occasioned by human activities, should not be ignored.
The effects of climate change continue to dawn on us in varying forms. Unfortunately, this fact is treated by many as an abstract subject.
The world assembled in Brazil to discuss this all important subject whose implications are as varied as they are perilous.
Although the American President, Donald Trump, has described the climate change phenomenon as a hoax, climate scientists think otherwise.
The Brazilian conference however, ended without a direct reference to fossil fuels by participants because of the divisive nature of the subject; we think that this is not right.
Because of the seriousness of the subject and its far-reaching effects on humanity, future engagements should be more blunt.
While we acknowledge the headway being made towards turning away from fuel-driven vehicles with the trickling in of electric vehicles, we think that a more robust policy change should be considered by government in this direction.
Government should begin to educate Ghanaians about the reality of electric cars and the fact that in the next few decades the fuel-powered vehicles will become a thing of the past.
We have observed a few electric cars and motorcycles in the country, and this means that our mechanics should start learning how to repair the new vehicles so they are not left stranded.
The world is changing and so must we.
We should be able to manage the extremes of weather conditions as exemplified by downpours and altered patterns of these.
Ghana was represented at the Brazilian conference. It is our hope that our representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to state officials will impart the knowledge from the deliberations to the good of the country. We as a country and part of the global community should play our part towards the reduction of the high emission level which is responsible for climate change, now the challenge of the world.
Climate change should be incorporated into our basic school curriculum so that future generations will be imbibed with the necessary knowledge about how to balance our relationship with nature.
The main culprits are the industrial world who should be doing more to reduce green gas emissions, but we too with our small economies have a role to play.
Let us consider celebrating a climate change day annually as a way of creating the necessary awareness about climate change.
