John Odartey Lamptey
John Odartey Lamptey, the man captured in the viral video abusing a woman believed to be his wife, has been arrested and is in the custody of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The incident, which happened in the suspect’s residence at Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality, captured Odartey Lamptey openly flogging the woman who was naked with canes and stomping her lower abdomen after she tried resisting the assault.
The video, which has been widely circulated, has caused a lot of reaction on social media, with many calling for stringent punishment from authorities to deter others from violent abuses.
After the video went viral, the suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at his family residence.
Following his arrest, two of his siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, who attempted to attack a female tenant they suspected of recording and circulating the video, were also arrested. The tenant has since been relocated to ensure her safety.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of CID, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, indicated that efforts are underway to locate and ensure the safety of the victim, who had fled the scene before the police arrived.
The statement reaffirmed police commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full rigours of the law.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) says it is working with the police among other stakeholders to ensure that the suspect faces the law.
In a press statement, the ministry described the act as not only barbaric and unacceptable, but also a clear violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of the victim.
It stressed that no individual has the right to subject another person to any form of abuse under any circumstances, emphasising that such actions are punishable under Ghanaian law.
“The Gender Minister has already contacted the Ghana Police Service, urging a swift, thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrator faces the full consequences of his actions. The Ministry further encouraged eyewitnesses and anyone with relevant information to assist the police to expedite justice,” part of the statement read.
The Ministry described domestic and sexual-based violence as a national emergency, and called on the public to actively report abusive behaviour as soon as it is detected.
The statement further warned that silence only emboldens perpetrators and endangers victims.
