The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo?Markin, has pledged to channel development into Tsiame, his paternal ancestral hometown in the Volta Region, promising to replicate the progress seen in Effutu under his leadership.
Speaking at a durbar held in his honour on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed a deep personal connection to the town and reaffirmed his commitment to seeing it thrive.
According to him, Tsiame is part of his story, and it is only right that he extends the same dedication and support there as he has in Effutu, the constituency he represents in Parliament.
“Tsiame is my father’s home. Winneba, which I represent, is my mother’s side. While I continue to champion development in Effutu, I assure you that Tsiame’s progress is equally close to my heart. I will not leave you behind,” he intimated.
The Minority Leader recognised the vital role of human resources in community uplift and announced a donation of skill?training equipment, including 100 sewing machines and 100 hair dryers, to local women’s groups.
“These aren’t just machines; they’re keys to self?reliance, symbols of dreams in motion, and the scaffolding for a future where women define their own destinies,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.
He invoked Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s call for Africa’s total liberation, which he linked to the economic empowerment of women.
The Minority Leader’s arrival in Tsiame was met with jubilation, with a convoy of motorbikes, cheering students lining the streets, and jubilant community members waving flags and placards.
Addressing rumours that his visit was a prelude to seeking office in Keta, Mr. Afenyo?Markin was unequivocal, asserting, “I am not here to prepare for a parliamentary bid in Keta—neither under a party banner nor as an independent. This visit is simply my way of giving back to the community of my forebears.”
Accompanied by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Mr. Afenyo?Markin lauded their partnership as a blueprint for bipartisan nation?building.
“This programme exemplifies what we can achieve when traditional authorities, government, community organisations, and the people unite behind a shared vision. Partisanship must not divide us,” he noted.
Mr. Gakpey urged recipients of the donated equipment to view them as tools for sustainable income, not items to be sold.
Kenneth Ashigbey, convener of the Media Coalition against Galamsey and chair of the durbar, praised the initiative as transcending party lines.
“Hon. Afenyo?Markin of the NPP and Hon. Gakpey of the NDC coming together proves that development knows no party colours. Our region’s growth depends on our collective efforts, beyond political affiliations,” he stressed.
