The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, says recent intermittent power outages popularly known as “dumsor” in Kumasi has been resolved.
According to him, the power supply challenges were as a result of a major fault which occurred in December 2024.
Answering questions on the floor of Parliament, the minister said the fault occurred in underground cables supplying power from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Ridge bulk supply point substation in Kumasi.
Unfortunately, at the time of the fault, there were no alternative routes available for power evacuation, resulting in significant disruptions in the area’s power supply, Mr. Jinapor intimated.
The minister explained that from December 2024 through January 2025, the region experienced several major outages, leaving the local population with unreliable power.
“What it meant is that when that major fault occurred, the system had not been configured to have an alternative route to allow power to be evacuated,” he said.
However, he indicated that following the Mahama administration’s assumption of office, immediate steps were taken to address the issue.
He asserted that the government initiated repairs, replacing approximately three kilometres of faulty lines in the affected section.
According to him, these efforts have yielded positive results, reporting that power supply to the area has improved significantly since the repairs were completed.
“We continue to monitor the situation and will take emergency remedial measures when necessary,” Mr. Jinapor added.
In addition to these repairs, the minister addressed growing concerns about the increasing demand for power in the Ashanti Region.
To meet this demand, he said there had been key developments, asserting that in mid-February 2025, GRIDCo successfully completed a 145 MVA transformer at the Awomanso supply point.
This new installation, he noted, has alleviated the need for load shedding in Kumasi and significantly improved the region’s power supply situation.
Mr. Jinapor expressed confidence that the energy sector in the region would continue to improve as additional works are undertaken to meet the rising demand for power.
