The late Pooley
General Manager of the Millennium Marathon, Ernest Buamah has called on the public to learn from the tragic incident that claimed the life of Kotoko supporter, Francis Frimpong aka Pooley.
Speaking during Monday’s edition of Guide Sports Xtra in Accra, Mr. Buamah said it was important for the football fraternity to learn from the incident to improve the sport for both players and supporters.
The tragic death of Francis Frimpong, a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter, has sparked an outpouring of emotion and unity across Ghana’s football landscape. Fans from rival clubs, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, came together over the weekend to hold a vigil, honoring the fallen comrade.
The show of solidarity was a rare sight, as these two giants of Ghanaian football are often at logger heads. However, the loss of life has left many hoping this could be a catalyst for meaningful change.
“Yesterday was very emotional. I felt the ambience, even on my phone,” said football analyst on the show, Justice Otchere. “This will be a catalyst for change. It will change a lot of things in our football system.”
But, Ernest Buamah questioned if truly Ghanaians had learned from this incident.
He is unconvinced the police response will truly transform fan behavior, noting that past tragedies like the May 9th stadium disaster have not led to lasting reforms.
“It seems the burden falls on the football authorities and the leadership of Kotoko and Hearts. As the two most powerful clubs, their ability to drive reform could determine whether Francis’ death sparks a new era of safety and civility in Ghanaian football,” he said.
