The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting to disrupt the upcoming 2024 elections with its vigilante group called “Eagle Force.”
National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who made the allegation, said the NDC is recruiting small-scale miners into the said vigilante group through Dr. Tony Aubynn, with the intention of creating chaos during the polls at polling stations of the NPP’s strongholds.
Popularly known as Nana B, Mr. Boakye revealed that on November 11, 2024, Dr. Tony Aubynn, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Commission and leader of the NDC’s Committee on Mining, held a covert meeting with pro-NDC small-scale miners at the conference hall of Mawuli Hotel in Obuasi.
“Let them know that this will not happen. The NPP is also aware of Mobile Money transactions that directly link key NDC members with payments paid to these trained thugs,” he asserted.
“These individuals are being deployed to strategic locations in the Upper East and Upper West Regions to cause havoc. We also discovered plans by the NDC to utilise ambulances to transport weapons to these goons on Election Day,” he added.
According to Nana B, the plan is for NDC thugs to ride motorcycles to various polling stations and shoot randomly in NPP strongholds in order to instill fear and panic, reduce voter turnout, and disrupt the counting process.
“We are also well-informed that some leading NDC members, including a retired Commissioner of Police, are coordinating efforts to escalate insecurity in the Ashanti Region and other NPP strongholds,” he said.
The NPP National Organiser stated that the plan also involves armed robbery and other criminal activities such as kidnapping in the run-up to the elections.
Nana B said they were informed that the security forces are on top of the situation, and Ghanaians have little to worry about.
He, however, indicated that the alarm bell is to inform the public and security agencies about the wicked objectives of the opposition party, which has allegedly spent the last four years obstructing government business.
Nana B also stated that, despite the passage of the Anti-Vigilantism Act, the NDC launched their vigilante organization, the “Azoka Boys,” on November 4, 2024, in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
He said that these men, who have a history of violent behaviour in previous elections, have been assigned the mission of frightening voters in the region in order to erode voter confidence and disrupt the electoral process
“Rest assured, the NPP will not sit idly by and allow these hooligans to succeed. It is disheartening that the launch of the Azoka Boys occurred in the full glare of the public, yet critical stakeholders—including the media, civil society organisations, religious bodies, and traditional authorities—have remained silent.
“This silence emboldens the NDC’s dangerous plans, which they intend to extend beyond the Ashanti Region to northern Ghana, where the NPP has made significant inroads,” he said.
The NPP National Organiser assured Ghanaians that the party is fully aware of the NDC’s alleged plans, and will employ all lawful means to safeguard the integrity of the December 7 polls and defend the country’s democracy.
He urged the Inspector-General of Police to arrest individuals involved in the launch of the Azoka Boys in Asawase, and to thoroughly investigate the NDC’s alleged acts of vigilantism.
Additionally, Nana Boakye called on state security and intelligence agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in thwarting what he described as the NDC’s “dangerous machinations.”
“Let history serve as a warning to the NDC: no party since 2000 has ever succeeded in using violence to win an election. On the contrary, violence undermines the efforts of those who plan it and strengthens the resolve of the party it targets,” he said.
