Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to revolutionize the country’s agricultural sector by establishing a mechanization center in every district.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Juapong, Volta Region, Bawumia emphasized the critical role agriculture plays in Ghana’s economy and the livelihoods of millions.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers, including reliance on rainfall and limited access to equipment.
To address these issues, Dr Bawumia promised to establish a district mechanization center in every district, providing farmers with access to tractors, combined harvesters, and planters, and prioritize irrigation infrastructure development to ensure year-round farming, regardless of rainfall.
This initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity, alleviate farmer burdens, and transform the sector into a modern, sustainable industry.
Background
Ghana’s agricultural sector has faced long-standing challenges, including limited mechanization, inadequate irrigation, and reliance on rainfall.
Previous administrations have attempted to address these issues, but progress has been slow.
Dr Bawumia’s proposal builds on the NPP’s existing agricultural initiatives, such as the “Planting for Food and Jobs” program.
The flagbearer’s focus on mechanization and irrigation aims to scale up agricultural production, improve farmer livelihoods, and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth.
