The people of Awutu Dodokwa, a farming community, are now benefiting from a mechanised borehole constructed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya West, Nenyi George Andah, and the Milani Pineapple Company Limited, at a cost of GH¢15,000 to change their age-old problem of lack of access to potable water.
The people had lived many years without access to potable water.
The community, which is inhabited by about 200 people, had to rely on nearby streams and rivers for their daily activities, with its attendant effects on their lives and health.
Aside from that they had to walk for several hours daily in search of water for their daily chores, which affected productivity. School children had their share of the negative effects since their search for water to bath before going to school affected thier punctuality, resulting in loss of instructional hours as they reported late to school.
Inauguration
At a short inauguration ceremony, Nenyi Andah said the provision of clean water to the residents was a big relief to the people who hitherto had to struggle to get water for their daily activities.
He explained that water was a key need of the people, and with support from Milani, which is operating in the area, the project was executed to provide potable water for the people.
He noted that henceforth, the project would foster a good community relationship between the people and the Milani Company Limited for their mutual benefit.
Nenyi Andah, who is also a Deputy Minister of Communications, admonished the people to make good use of the facility, as well as put in place a regular maintenance arrangement to prolong its lifespan.
According to him, if the project was well maintained, it would motivate Milani to undertake future projects in the community.
The Managing Director of Milani Company Limited, Mr Bijean Milani, said his outfit had employed about 200 workers from the community and its environs since it started operating in the area.
He noted that potable water was a basic necessity adding that Milani Company supported the project to improve the standard of living of the people in the area.
He added that the project formed part of the corporate social responsibility of the company.
Gratitude
The Chief of the town, Nenyi Kweku Adawu I, thanked the MP and the management of the Milani Company Limited for providing them with potable water.
He promised on behalf of the people, to maintain the project for the benefit of generations yet unborn.
