President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo rounded off his two-day visit to the Brong Ahafo Region with mini-rallies and courtesy calls on traditional rulers, during which he called on them to embrace the current campaign against illegal mining to save the country’s environment from further degradation.
He stated that the exercise would be successful if chiefs, who are the custodians of the land, teamed up with the government to stamp out the galamsey menace once and for all.
During a courtesy call on the Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, the President said the government would not relent but sustain the current campaign against illegal mining and asked for the support of all stakeholders for the desired results to be achieved.
He restated government’s resolve to work around the clock to fulfill all its 2016 election promises.
Those promises, according to Nana Akufo-Addo, included the free senior high school and the one district, one factory policies.
He thanked the Sunyani Traditional Council for smoking the peace pipe with the Brong Ahafo Regional executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and called on the two sides to bury their differences in the interest of the development of the region.
For his part, Nana Nkrawiri drew the President’s attention to the development lapses that were making life very difficult for residents of the Sunyani municipality.
One such problem, he said, was the delay in the rehabilitation of a portion of the Sunyani-Kotokrom road in front of the Sunyani Regional Hospital.
He explained that while the situation posed a danger to drivers, passengers and pedestrians, the dusty nature of the portion had also become a source of worry to both patients and staff of the hospital.
Dormaa Ahenkro

On his recent meeting with the three living former Presidents, he revealed that they had very fruitful discussions and promised to continue to seek their advice and support from time to time on some pertinent national issues.
For his part, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu commended the government for its bold decision to wage a relentless fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
He advised the President to be careful about his close associates, including his ministers, in order not to be led astray.
On development projects in the area, the Dormaahene called for the construction of a sports stadium in Dormaa Ahenkro to whip up the interest of the youth in sporting activities.
He also appealed to the President for the completion of projects on the Dormaa Campus of the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
The President and his team also visited the Berekum College of Education, as part of his visit to the Berekum municipality, where a mini-rally was held in his honour.
Traffic
An hour before the President addressed a mini-rally at the Sunyani Main Taxi Rank, the normally traffic-free town experienced heavy traffic, with some drivers spending about 30 minutes in traffic before they could pass through the central business area.
When the President finally arrived at the rally ground, hundreds of people besieged the area, with hundreds others perching on top of uncompleted buildings around the lorry station.
In his brief address, President Akufo-Addo reiterated the fact that his government would not tell lies but fulfil all its campaign promises.
