The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture will collaborate with the Ghana Cosmetology and Wellness Federation to craft a strategy to promote the tourism industry.
As part of the collaboration, the federation is expected to present a proposal for the organisation of a major cosmetology and wellness industry fair which would showcase the industry as well as “market Ghana to the world”.
A Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, Nana Bright Oduro-Kwateng, called for the collaboration when executives of the Ghana Cosmetology and Wellness Federation (GCWF) visited the ministry to share their vision and activities with the ministry.
Packaging
Mr Oduro-kwarteng welcomed the delegation and said the ministry was ready to partner organisations such as the federation to boost the tourism, arts and culture industry.
He commended the federation for bringing a number of associations together with the aim of standardising their operations and assured them of the ministry’s support.
“When our culture and creativity is well packaged it will earn the nation a lot of foreign exchange. An event that would champion the opportunities in the industry will contribute to the growth of the country in general,” he said.
Interventions
The Chairperson of the federation, Mrs Grace Amey-Obeng, said the organisation formed a year ago was made up of 15 associations with 22,000 practitioners as members.
She said the industry was overlooked and considered a preserve of dropouts “but that is not true because it’s not scientific”.
Mrs Amey-Obeng said the federation was currently working on changing the negative perceptions of operators in the industry.
She said there were currently a number of government interventions that the federation would explore.
Following the formation of the federation, she said it had collaborated with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to develop standards for products used by their members.
The beauty and personal care industry, she said, was one of the services which trained and absorbed young people for employment.
A joint programme with the ministry, she said would result in better public services provided by operators in the industry.
“Every hotel has a spa, a salon, a fitness centre and other such services and we can lace our services with Ghanaian values to market Ghana,” Mrs Amey-Obeng stated.
