Soon after Stonebwoy was announced winner in of the Reggae Song of the Year category at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) event last Saturday, Reggae musician, Ras Kuuku angrily stormed out of the Accra International Conference Centre with his entourage in tow.
As Ras Kuuku, who believed the award should have come to him made his way out of the auditorium, he kept screaming “thieves’’, ‘’cheats’’ and ‘’Akronfuo’’ (meaning thieves in Twi) to express his displeasure at the award eluding him.
When Showbiz caught up with him to find out who he was hurling those words at, Ras Kuuku did not hesitate to mention Charterhouse, organisers of the VGMA.
“Charterhouse needs a diss song for them to wake up. This is total robbery and I am going to set the record straight with a diss song soon.
“How can Stonebwoy win Reggae Song of the Year when it is clear that I deserve it more. My diss song to Charterhouse will be out soon,” Ras Kuuku said.
Asked why he believed the award should have come to him and not Stonebwoy, Ras Kuuku said he had all the votes coming in from his numerous fans across Ghana and he was very sure he won but Charterhouse gave the award to Stonebwoy because of favouritism.
Although he would not say what Charterhouse would gain out of giving the award to Stonebwoy instead of him, he told Showbiz that no Reggae artiste worked harder than him last year.
“I had three nominations: Best Collaboration of the Year, Reggae/ Dancehall Artiste of the Year and Reggae/ Dancehall Song of the Year. Though I lost out on Best Collaboration of the Year and Reggae/ Dancehall Artiste of the Year, the Reggae Song of the Year should have come to me,” he said.
He explained that his song, Nwansina, was the biggest Reggae song in the year under review and it was not fair that he did not win with it.
Ras Kuuku said if Charterhouse continued doing things this way, great musicians would soon start boycotting the awards.
Known for songs like Show Dem Love, Nwansina, Kpagbum Style, Bad System and Gban Ghan, Ras Kuuku whose real name is Jonas Kurankye, said losing out on the awards last Saturday would not stop him from churning out good songs.
