The tennis courts at the Accra Sports Stadium are due for major face-lift following the decision of the Executive Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr Daniel Mckorley, to renovate it at a cost of GHC50,000.
The courts are currently in a state of disrepair with only a few days to the start of Ghana's flagship tennis tournament, the McDan Open on April 24, which is being put together by the McDan Group in collaboration with the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF)
Dr McKorley announced his decision to renovate the facility last Friday after witnessing for himself visible structural cracks on the walls and playing surface of the courts, a falling wire mesh and hanging aluminium roofing during an inspection tour of the venue.
Ahead of the start of the 2017 McDan Open on April 24, McDan is here inspecting the court and I am promising to adopt this court and make sure it is in a good state. We will come and renovate it and make sure we keep it running year after year, Dr McKorley pledged.
He added, we are going to renovate this place and it is going to cost us GH? 50,000 to renovate these courts and we are going to do that and ensure that every year we maintain it.
The director of technical at the National Sports Authority, Joshua Mensah, who accompanied McDan on the tour, expressed gratitude to the McDan Group for once again coming to the aid of Ghana tennis and his outfit.
He said: Everybody here should appreciate the role being played by McDan, especially for coming to renovate the tennis courts.
The president of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Isaac Aboagye Duah, said Dr McKorley had been responsible for the painting of the courts over the last three years and had also promised to organise three junior tournaments this year as part of efforts towards unearthing the next generation of Ghanaian tennis players.
