Fifteen young men and women from Tarkwa Mine host communities of Gold Fields Ghana have graduated from the Community Youth Apprenticeship Training (CYAT) Programme.
The CYAT is an initiative of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) equipped the youth with employable skills in domestic and industrial electrification.

According to Dr. Catherine Kuupol Kuutor, Mine Manager of Gold Fields Ghana Limited- Tarkwa Mine said, the programme is a testament to the company’s commitment to creating enduring value beyond mining.
She noted that the Foundation has invested more than USD 4.81 million over the years in technical and livelihood training.
This, she noted is impacting over 264 young people through programmes including Heavy-Duty Equipment Operation, Precision Welding, Engineering Apprenticeships, Graduate Training, and community-based trades such as dressmaking, hairdressing, welding, and auto-electricals.
“Introduced in 2024, the CYAT Programme expands the Foundation’s focus on skills development by offering structured training in electrification. Delivered in partnership with the Mac Partners Training Institute in Obuasi, the pilot enrolled 15 trainees; five females and ten males who have now completed both classroom and practical training.”
She explained that as part of the programme, trainees undertook a three-month industrial attachment with Alqu Rubber and Engineering Solutions, gaining hands-on experience and industry exposure. They also received entrepreneurship training to prepare them for both employment and self-employment opportunities.

Dr. Kuupol Kutor revealed that USD 106,730.25 was invested in the implementation of the programme, reaffirming the Foundation’s belief in empowering the youth.
“All participants passed the National Vocational and Training Institute (NVTI) examinations. Each trainee received a full set of professional tools during the graduation ceremony” she added
She congratulated the graduates for their dedication and hard work, urging them to apply their skills with integrity and continue learning.
She also encouraged employers to consider the newly trained electricians, as they are ready and capable talents.
She expressed appreciation to partners, facilitators, and families for their support, noting that the CYAT Programme marks a significant milestone in strengthening livelihoods and building resilient communities.
“Together, we are building a future in which young people can flourish, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.
The Deputy Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Chris Yalley, lauded the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for its continued investment in skills development and youth empowerment as young trainees graduated from the Community Youth Apprenticeship Training Programme.
He said this is remarkable contribution to community transformation and emphasized its role in preparing young people with practical, industry-relevant skills.
He noted that the programme marks not just the completion of training, but the beginning of new opportunities for the beneficiaries.
“You have acquired practical skills that will enable you to contribute meaningfully to your communities, to industry, and to Ghana’s broader development,” he told the graduating class, commending them for their discipline and perseverance.
Mr. Yalley highlighted the national importance of skills acquisition, especially within the energy sector, stating that Ghana’s push toward a modern and technology-driven energy system requires a steady supply of competent artisans, technicians, and professionals. He said initiatives like the apprenticeship programme help bridge the country’s skills gap and create sustainable pathways to employment and entrepreneurship.
Mr. Yalley commended the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for championing youth development and investing in programmes that uplift host communities. He urged the graduates to continue learning and strive for excellence as they enter the world of work.
“You are ambassadors of this programme, and the future you shape will inspire many others,” he encouraged.
