…The rise of the African woman who chooses herself
There’s something powerful happening across Africa. Women are beginning to choose themselves, their peace, their dreams, and their purpose. They’re no longer waiting for permission to shine, they’re stepping forward with quiet confidence and bold faith.
For too long, many women were taught to shrink, to play small, to apologise for wanting more, or to dim their light so others could shine. But times are changing. The African woman of today is redefining what it means to be strong, feminine, and free. She’s building businesses, leading teams, raising families, and still finding time to pour into her growth.
Choosing yourself doesn’t mean being selfish. It means recognising that you matter too. It means understanding that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Through my coaching sessions at SHIMEI Solutions, I’ve seen how powerful that realisation can be. When women learn to set boundaries, prioritise their goals, and believe in their worth, everything around them begins to shift.
One of my favourite parts of coaching is watching that transformation take place. I’ve seen women who once doubted themselves start speaking up in meetings, launching ideas they had kept hidden, and walking into rooms with new confidence, all because they made a simple but life-changing decision, to choose themselves.
Being unapologetic doesn’t mean being loud or forceful. It means being sure—sure of who you are, what you bring, and where you’re going. It’s knowing that your journey might look different, but it’s still valid.
As African women, we carry culture, tradition, and expectation on our shoulders. But we also carry grace, strength, and vision. And when those qualities meet purpose, there’s no limit to what we can do.
If you’re reading this and you’ve been putting yourself last for too long, this is your reminder: you are enough, and you deserve to take up space. Start small, set a goal, revisit your vision board, or join a coaching circle. Surround yourself with women who inspire and challenge you.
Because when one woman chooses herself, she gives permission for others to do the same. And that’s how we rise, unapologetically, powerfully, and together.
