The insurance industry, led by the Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, on November 17, 2025 presented a cheque valued at GH¢100,000 to the 37 Military Hospital to support the medical care of victims of the military recruitment stampede that occurred on November 12, 2025 at the El-Wak Stadium.
Speaking on behalf of the industry, Dr. Zakariah reaffirmed the insurance sector’s commitment to national support, social responsibility and the protection of lives and livelihoods. She noted that the donation aligns with the industry’s broader commitment to collaboration in times of national distress.
Dr. Zakariah further announced that the insurance industry is in the process of establishing a National Insurance Disaster Fund to provide structured and sustainable support in times of crises like this.
She added that the presentation marks the beginning of long-term interventions the industry intends to strengthen, going forward. She emphasised the industry’s readiness to work with all stakeholders to ensure that lessons are learnt, systems are reinforced and assistance reaches those who need it most, ultimately contributing to a more resilient Ghana.
Contributors to this donation are the National Insurance Commission (NIC), the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG), the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG), the Ghana Insurance University College and the Ghana National
bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Cared Insurance Scheme.
On behalf of the 37 Military Hospital, Commodore Seth Adjei Adjetey, Head of the Surgical Department who received the cheque, expressed profuse gratitude to Ghana’s insurance industry for the timely and thoughtful gesture. He described the donation as highly significant, especially as several victims remain on admission across the Internal Care Unit (ICU), emergency units and wards.
Commodore Adjetey gave the assurance that the funds would be used judiciously to enhance the treatment and recovery of the injured. He noted that while the Military High Command has been supporting the provision of investigations, medications and other care needs, the additional financial support from the insurance industry will greatly improve the quality of care and contribute to saving lives.
He concluded by expressing the hospital’s deep appreciation for the industry’s solidarity during this difficult period.
