The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) recently convened its Educational Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Takoradi, Western Region, under the theme ‘Balancing the Compliance, Ethics and Business Sustainability Equation’.
President of the CIIG Solomon Lartey, in an address, emphasised: “Compliance ensures that organisations operate within the boundaries of law and regulation. Yet, as we have seen across industries, adherence to the letter of the law is no longer enough. Ethical leadership demands a deeper commitment to fairness, accountability and respect for the broader social and environmental context in which business operates. Ethics breathe life into compliance, transforming it from obligation into culture.”
He further highlighted the role of sustainability in shaping the future of insurance. “Sustainability completes this equation. It challenges organisations to think beyond short-term gains and to align their business models with long-term societal well-being. True sustainability is not simply about minimising harm, but about creating shared value—strengthening the fabric of trust between businesses and the communities they serve.”
Adding to this, Dr. Justice Ofori, former Commissioner of Insurance and Guest of Honour, urged practitioners to uphold the highest ethical principles and standards, stressing that integrity and professionalism remain the bedrock of a thriving insurance industry. His call reinforced the need for continuous education and adherence to global best practices to maintain public confidence and industry credibility.
The Special Guest of Honour, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief (Omanhen) of Essikado (British Sekondi), delivered a powerful message, urging insurance practitioners and companies to work in the interest of their communities, stressing: “Business success must translate into social good.”
His remarks reinforced the conference’s central theme, reminding stakeholders that the ultimate measure of progress lies in the positive impact businesses create for society.
This high-level gathering served as a strategic platform for dialogue among industry leaders, insurance companies, brokerage firms and regulatory stakeholders, all committed to shaping the future of Ghana’s insurance landscape. The event focused on addressing emerging challenges in compliance and ethical standards, while exploring innovative approaches to ensure long-term business sustainability in an increasingly competitive and regulated environment.
Experts shared insights on aligning regulatory compliance with ethical practices without compromising profitability.
Deliberations also touched on the need for robust frameworks to strengthen consumer trust and enhance operational transparency.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, the CIIG reaffirmed its role as a catalyst for professional development, ethical conduct and sustainable growth within Ghana’s insurance industry. The conference outcomes are expected to influence policy direction, corporate governance practices and capacity-building initiatives in the months ahead.
Aligned with CIIG’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), the institute, in collaboration with the Association of Young Insurance Professionals (YIPS Ghana), visited Bompeh Secondary Technical School. The engagement aimed to educate students and staff on the importance of insurance in everyday life and encourage the students to consider careers in the insurance industry.
Notable among the speakers included Mr. Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, Deputy Commissioner of Insurance; Mr. Solomon Lartey, President of CIIG; Mr. Lawrence Daniels, Country Director of YIPS Ghana and PRO of CIIG; Mrs. Mercy Boampong, CEO of Serene Insurance; and Mr. Sikapa Kofi Agyei, General Secretary of YIPS Ghana

As part of the outreach, the school received chairs and tables from the CIIG and souvenirs donated by Coronation Insurance, MiLife Insurance and Sunu Assurances. Students were taken through the basics of insurance, its benefits and career opportunities in the sector, reinforcing CIIG’s mission to build awareness and capacity for the future of insurance in Ghana.
The conference fostered collaboration among insurers, brokers and allied professionals, creating synergies for growth and resilience in the sector.
