The traditional authority in the Ningo Traditional Area on Saturday gave residents and the visiting public an insight into their affirmation for peace, following a durbar to mark the end of the Homowo festivities.
The colourful event, which had President John Mahama as the guest of honour, came months after the enstoolment of Nene Osroagbo Djangmah Xil as the new Paramount Chief of the Ningo Traditional Area. For twenty years, the people of Ningo were without a substantive chief, following claims of legitimacy over the stool.
But with the settlement behind them and a new chief in place, the town came together and in a show of unity, demonstrated their desire to work for the interest of the greater good of the people of Ningo. In an address, Nene Osroagbo Djangmah Xil, who was flanked by his queenmother Naana Dugbakuwor Dugba II, said the town has turned the right corner; thus, the low literacy rate in the town – especially among children of schoolgoing age – will be tackled. “If education is our best legacy, we must protect its institutions,” he added.
Nene Djangmah Xil also appealed to the government to rehabilitate and modernise the Ningo Senior High School. “This institution has shaped leaders across Ghana. But today, it faces infrastructure challenges, inadequate logistics and overstretched resources.”
In a speech read on his behalf by Tourism Minister Dzifa Abla Gomashie, President Mahama underscored the importance of tradition to the soul and spirit of a people, and call for unity among the population.
He said the NDC’s government will continue to invest in education, to ensure no one is left behind.
On his part, the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Traditional Area, Sam George, who is also the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, assusred the people of his readiness to pull development to the traditional areas. “In the past I said my mother was not in the kitchen and rightly so; but today my mother is in the kitchen, and we shall eat and eat well,” he said to greater applause from the gathering.
He said an ICT centre as well as a nursing teacher training college will soon be established in the Ningo township to serve the needs of the people in the traditional areas. On the Tsopoli road, he said the President has personally made it a priority project and work will soon start on it.
Other people at the durbar included the Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Nene Tetteh Wakah, Paramount Chief of the Prampram Traditional Area and his divisional chiefs, faith leaders, politicians and members of the general public.
