The cackling ocean foams at the mouth, as the thundering sticks of drummers manipulate the surface of their drums, to the delight of onlookers as a long retinue of celebrants led by the Ningo Mantse Nene Osro Agbo Djangmah XII and Naana Dugbakuor Dugba II, the Queenmother of Ningo, mark this year’s Homowo celebrations with the sprinkling of the traditional meal, Kpokpoi.
The sprinkling of the traditional meal is to honour the memory of their forebears, who overcame extreme hunger after harvesting corn which was far in excess of what they anticipated.
The people of Ningo have long anticipated this year’s celebration, following the successful enstoolment of a chief, following the successful settlement of minor misunderstandings that existed within the hierarchy of the kingmakers.
But with the various groups embracing peace and recognising that their destiny is tied to one chord, they buried their differences, came together and ensured for the first time in two decades, the memory of their forebears must be honoured in the right way.
The red and black colours dominated the event, as the chief, queenmother and elders sprinkled the meal in the designated traditional areas, ending at the Djenge Shrine, where libations were offered for goodwill. Nene was dressed in a warrior outfit, to signal the seriousness of the sacred ceremony.
Speaking to the press, the paramount chief underscored the importance of unity to the development of the Ningo Traditional Area, and he said everyone who matters in the affairs of Ningo development would be brought to the table, for them to share ideas that would lead to the overall development of the town.
“We have acute water shortage which has lingered for 5 years now, bad roads and our community hospital which is about 70 percent complete-and these are issues dear to our hearts,” he said.
He also appealed to the government to help refurbish the Ningo secondary school which he said needs urgent attention.
