Deputy Chief Executive Officer-Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey has stated that government remains committed to investing in and developing the tourism sector to position Ghana as a leading tourism hub in West Africa.
He said government, in collaboration with private sector investors, is working to enhance infrastructure, marketing and technology to make tourism a key driver of economic growth, job creation and revenue generation.
Mr. Aggrey made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Gulkpe Naa palace in Tamale as part of a five-day working tour of the Northern Region.
The delegation also visited the Ibrahim Mahama Red Clay Studio to assess its tourism potential and explore ways government can partner with the private sector to promote domestic tourism and preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage.
As part of activities leading up to Panafest and Emancipation Day celebrations, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture – together with the Ghana Tourism Authority – has embarked on a tour covering the Savannah, Northern and Upper East Regions. The delegation includes Deputy Director of Operations, Ekow Sampson; PANAFEST representative, Taqiyya Saleem; and Regional Director, Lawyer Angelou Yossi Dogbe, along with other staff and diaspora representatives.
The tour will continue through Bono, Ashanti and Assin Fosu in Central Region, culminating in Cape Coast. This year’s Panafest and Emancipation Day will be held from July 17 to August 2 under the theme ‘Let Us Speak of Reparative Justice – Pan-African Artistic Activism’.
Mr. Aggrey highlighted the uniqueness of each community in Ghana, citing Tamale’s prominence in leather production and the Red Clay Studio’s use of recycled materials as examples of sustainable tourism attractions.
He stressed the need to promote such initiatives beyond traditional festivals and events.
PANAFEST representative Taqiyya Saleem described PANAFEST as a historic movement that deepens the relationship between the African diaspora and Ghana. She noted Ghana’s leadership in Pan-Africanism and its commitment to the global liberation struggle.
Lawyer Dogbe added that although Panafest is mainly celebrated in the south, its roots are in the northern regions. He explained that starting the national tour from the north recognises this historical significance.
Secretary to the Gulkpe Naa, Mohammed Rashad, thanked the delegation for their visit and called for stronger collaboration to unlock the of the northern region’s tourism potential for economic growth and job creation.
