Infinity970, a non-profit organization, has underscored the need for a collective effort in the battle against air pollution in the country, as air-related diseases and death toll keep rising.
Director of Infinity970, Rev. Emmanuel Lamptey, emphasised that with World Health Organization (WHO) statistics indicating about 28,000 air-pollution deaths annually in the country, both citizens, the government, and donor partners, as well as other stakeholders, must partake in the fight to address air pollutants to keep the environment safe for current and future generations.
Speaking at the ‘Clean Air Awareness Campaign’ launch in Accra, organized by Infinity970 in partnership with Breathe Cities, he urged Ghanaians and the government to intensify efforts to combat air pollution, which poses serious health risks to the population.
Rev. Lamptey noted that emissions from vehicles, the burning of waste, other domestic fire activities, and dust from unpaved roads contribute significantly to air pollution, endangering the health of commuters and residents alike.
“We believe in empowering communities through education and interaction. Our mission is to help improve the lives, livelihoods and well-being of our communities, through engagement, advocacy and access to quality products and services, because we dare to imagine a world where knowledge, skills, access and tools work hand in hand for healthy lives.
“We are championing the Clean Air initiative because it falls within our scope of Education. Community health & Well-being,” he said.
He noted that Infinity790 is open to working in partnership with like-minded individuals and entities to exchange ideas and knowledge on potential areas for co-operation, for social impact and healthy lifestyles.
He appealed particularly to drivers whose vehicles emit excessive fumes to help curb pollution by getting their vehicles checked regularly and damage fixed.
Vice Chairman of the GPRTU at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Odawna Branch, Alhaji Issah Mohammed, on his part, praised Infinity970’s initiative and pledged the union’s full support.
He assured that drivers at the station would do their best to promote cleaner air.
He also called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the campaign to help end air pollution, which he described as a serious public health threat.
