Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, an indigenous mining firm backed by both local and international investors, has announced the commencement of full-scale construction works on its flagship Black Volta Gold Mine in the Upper West region.
The company confirmed it had secured project financing from its existing shareholders and initiated preparatory site works, paving the way for infrastructure development, civil works, and recruitment.
In a statement issued by the company, Azumah Resources said it is working closely with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission to ensure all regulatory requirements are met to allow for a seamless project rollout.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for Azumah Resources Ghana,” said Professor Prince Ofori Amponsah, Country Lead.
“After years of exploration work at our Kalsegra site, we are pleased to transition into the mine construction phase. This development will bring significant employment opportunities and economic activity to the region.”
The company estimates the project will create over 1,000 jobs during construction, with additional permanent roles once operations commence. Opportunities will span sectors such as logistics, catering, power generation, and agriculture.
Project Director, Rob Ciccini, said Azumah’s shareholders have reaffirmed their long-term commitment to Ghana, enabling the company to proceed with construction. He confirmed the firm had parted ways with former contractor Engineers & Planners Co. Ltd. after delays in delivering contracted civil works.
“The breakdown in execution timelines led to avoidable project setbacks, including legal disputes and ICC arbitration proceedings,” Ciccini said.
“Despite these challenges, we’ve made substantial progress and are now positioned to move forward without E&P.”
Construction was originally scheduled to begin in July 2024, but was delayed due to litigation and unresolved contractor obligations. The company emphasised that its recent progress signals renewed momentum for what it describes as a critical national project.
While the company did not disclose the total value of the investment or the projected gold output, it stated that the Black Volta project is expected to generate long-term socio-economic benefits across the Upper West region.
“Azumah Resources is not just building a mine, we’re building sustainable livelihoods,” Ciccini said. “Our approach is anchored in responsible mining and strong partnerships with local communities.”
The company expressed gratitude to government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the Minerals Commission, and local traditional authorities, for their continued support.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony is expected to be announced soon in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
