They were the pampered daughters of Auntie Suzzie
All three
From Angel to Pearl to Sweetie
Raised inside a house gated with walls raised tall
Trained to touch nothing except to eat
Trained not to touch it…with decorated fingers and nail polish
Allowed to idle in decorated toes and nails
Blessed with nourished fingers and claws
Dressed in garnished toes and nails and many more
Served breakfast in bed
With spread of omelet on bread
Served a dinner of cakes and chocolates
Served by housemaids and handmaidens
From bedroom to bathroom to bedroom
Handmaidens who served garnished dishes
Housemaids who washed dirty dishes
Houseboys who laundered things
All things outer and inner
All things over and under
II
The young Sweetie grew up in beauty and sweetness
To shine above her older pampered siblings
For young suitors to notice her beauty and sweetness
For a date after another date to end in a courtship
Many courtships never ended up in a walk down the aisle
Sweetie never grew up beyond her beauty and sweetness
Never ever to convince her suitors
Of her matrimonial sweetness
For she failed in some matters
Even to boil an egg was a fumbling toil
This, her matrimonial chances it foiled
III
Pearl appeared better prepared for life
Reaping rich results from academic pursuits
Finding a suitor early in her academic journey
And sticking to him even with holes in his pocket
The young suitor saw
But ignored Pearl’s kitchen flaws
Things looked up
Till it was time to hook up
…for life
Then her kitchen flaws showed up
…as a future wife
Then his pocket holes enhanced their emptiness
For Pearl to doubt his marital usefulness
Then Pearl desired a fuller pocket
From a higher bracket
So Suitor abandoned Pearl for a compatible mistress
For such was his preference
IV
Angel bided her time to seek angelic intervention
In a short time angelic attention turned to her situation
Before she peaked she was picked to be a suitor’s complement
Before she petitioned for angelic intervention
She picked seed to be a parent
Before Angel could practice to act parent
Auntie Suzzie made one cold attempt
She seized her daughter’s daughter to feed
And to pamper
To raise in the four walls of doting
Auntie Suzzie now made a bold decision
To chase away Angel’s husband of little means
To fix her another husband of plentiful means
But that could not be after many moons have passed
As Angel waited for another angelic intervention
She made her way back into the house of gated tall walls
To bide her time
The second time
Inside the coop that pampered all three for life
V
And so it came to pass
That the daughters with decorated nails
Were pampered for life
And househelps with tortured days
Were prepared for life
