Coastal Network Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to providing relief to underprivileged communities through education, has donated text books and reading materials to two schools in the Greater Accra Region.
The beneficiary schools are Dawhenya Methodist ‘B’ Basic School and Prampram Presbyterian Basic School.
The donation, which included 200 Note 1 exercise books, 40 my first copybooks, 45 storybooks, and 360 mathematics and science textbooks for Basic 1 to 3, is part of the Foundation’s broader mission to equip the next generation with knowledge and skills for a sustainable future.
Speaking to this portal, a board member of the Foundation, Rev Isaac Abeka pledged the organization’s commitment to promoting literacy in deprived communities, particularly within coastal areas.
“Our vision is to give a helping hand to the underprivileged in society. We want to encourage reading among young ones, from kindergarten to the tertiary level, and our aim is to tackle various aspects of education,” the board member stated. “We realized that when children are not engaged in productive activities, they often turn to fishing and other informal work. Our goal is to cultivate a culture where reading becomes their preferred pastime.”
The Foundation also called on the general public and corporate organizations to support their initiative by donating additional reading materials. They acknowledged the contributions of Adwinsa and Masterman Publications, whose sponsorship made the donation possible.
The Headteacher of Dawhenya Methodist B School, Mr. Theophilus Adofo Gyamfi, expressed profound gratitude for the donation, describing it as a significant addition to the school’s meagre educational resources.
“The community where we find ourselves has many underprivileged students who are eager to learn. We have put programmes in place to enhance their reading skills, and this donation will go a long way in supporting our efforts. We are hopeful that similar support will come in the future, especially in areas such as sanitation and hygiene, which are critical for our female students,” he stated.
Mr. Gyamfi further revealed that the school had applied for support from the Foundation and was thrilled to have been selected as a beneficiary. He encouraged other organizations and individuals to support the cause of literacy development in deprived communities.
The Girls’ Prefect and a final-year student at Dawhenya Methodist B School, Miss Phoebe Agbayizah expressed her gratitude to the Coastal Network Foundation for the books donated.
She noted that many students in the school struggled to afford textbooks, and the foundation’s support would significantly enhance their studies. She extended her heartfelt thanks to the organization and prayed for God’s blessings upon them for their kindness.
At the Prampram Presbyterian Basic School, the Coastal Network Foundation donated approximately 300 textbooks, including 80 literacy and activity books for Kindergarten 1 and 2, 70 English language textbooks for Basic 1 to 3, 70 Religious and Moral Education books for the same levels, and 70 Creative Arts books and 45 story books.
Assistant Headteacher of the School, Mr. Alfred Dankwa Yirenkyi, expressed gratitude for the donation, stressing its positive impact on students’ learning experiences. He noted that the availability of reading materials would enhance students’ interaction with their environment and broaden their understanding of various subjects.
Mr. Yirenkyi further disclosed that many students struggle with reading due to lack of books, and other resources, making such donations crucial for improving literacy and language skills.
“With these books, our students will have the resources they need to improve their reading and comprehension. This will not only enhance their academic performance but also boost their confidence in speaking English,” he stated.
Coastal Network Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its impact beyond coastal areas, ensuring that every deprived school in Ghana receives educational relief. The Foundation remains open to partnerships aimed at equipping young learners with essential reading and writing skills to foster a culture of lifelong learning.
