General Manager for Mobile Money (MoMo), Northern Business District, MTN Ghana, Nii Adotey Mingle, has urged stakeholders—including consumers, merchants and agents—to intensify their collaboration with financial technology companies (Fintechs) to unlock further growth opportunities.
Speaking at the ‘MoMo at 15’ awards dinner and dance in Kumasi, Mr. Mingle highlighted that while Ghana has made significant progress in the Fintech sector, critical areas of the financial ecosystem remain underexplored.
“Although wireless service penetration looks impressive, services such as credit, digital payments, cross-border transactions, investments, insurance, wealth management and e-commerce are still largely untapped,” he noted.
Mr. Mingle emphasised that deepened partnerships, along with investments in advanced skills and technology, are essential for unlocking these opportunities and building a transformative economy.
“The Fintech industry is on the brink of explosive growth in the next decade, given the robust infrastructure and policy framework being developed by regulators and policy-makers,” he added.
MTN’s commitment to financial inclusion
Mr. Mingle reiterated MTN Ghana’s dedication to advancing financial inclusion, stating: “We are committed to collaborating with stakeholders to achieve our vision of financial freedom for every Ghanaian.
In the coming weeks, we will announce key partnerships in areas such as payments, beginning with our collaboration with Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), to scale the Ghana QR deployment nationwide. We aim to push the boundaries of innovation to adapt to the evolving technological landscape, ensuring no one is left behind,” he said.
Celebrating 15 years of MoMo
The event was held to appreciate agents and merchants from the Bono East, Bono, Ahafo and Ashanti Regions.
“After 15 years, we are proud to have co-created and contributed significantly to Ghana’s Fintech ecosystem. This includes generating direct and indirect employment, increasing government revenue, facilitating business operations and creating digital entrepreneurs. Above all, we’ve brought dignity to many Ghanaians through the transformative power of financial inclusion,” Mr. Mingle stated.
Senior Business Manager for MTN’s Northern Business District, Simon Amoh, also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders whose efforts have made mobile money a success over the past 15 years.
“We are here to celebrate and reward the resilience and commitment of stakeholders in making Ghana a cashless society,” he said.
