Nangodi — The youth and women groups in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region have pledged to go out and vote massively for Mr Michael Zuri, as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nabdam Constituency in the upcoming 2020 general election.
The groups declared their intention when Mr Zuri submitted his nomination forms to the constituency executives at the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) office in the Nabdam constituency at Nangodi during the weekend.
He is one of the party's parliamentary candidate aspirants for the primary scheduled for September this year.
The supporters chanted and sang songs in their local dialects translated as "God has answered our prayers. Mr Michael Zuri is our saviour."
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times in an interview, Mr Daniel Abugre, a spokesperson for one of the groups, stated that the candidate was not only very close to the people at the grassroots, but also compassionate and approachable, irrespective of one's political affiliation.
Mr Samuel Nsoh, another youth leader, stated that the aspirant had supported many students in the constituency to complete their education up to the tertiary level and added that "we have the hope that he would do more when supported to win the seat".
Mrs Hana Tarina, one of the women group leaders, described Mr Zuri as "a game changer" who supported a lot of women groups in the area to establish petty trading, and that he was also someone who is also easily accessible.
She stated that as women groups they approached Mr Zuri during the 2012 and 2016 general elections to persuade him to stand as MP for the area but he declined.
She noted that, now that he had accepted their proposal, they would work hard to galvanise more votes for him to ensure that he won both the primaries and the parliamentary seat.
The aspirant said he had contributed a lot to the development of the party at both the constituency, regional and national levels and thanked the groups for declaring their support for him.
He further appealed to all his supporters to desist from engaging in campaign of insults.
He stated that his youthful exuberant, coupled with his track record in the constituency would not only make him the best marketable candidate for the party, but would also make him serve the constituents better.
He therefore, appealed to all the delegates to rally behind him to win the primary as well as the general election, stressing "the current National Democratic Congress MP is not living up to expectation".
