The government has announced plans to rename the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in honour of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
The move, according to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, is in recognition of the former President’s instrumental role in the establishment and growth of the university.
Speaking during a meeting with the Governing Council of UHAS on May 28, the Minister disclosed that a bill for the renaming of the University will be laid before Parliament in the coming weeks.
“Government has taken the decision to name the University of Health and Allied Sciences after the late J.E.A. Mills—a posthumous honour to recognise his contributions as a statesman, former President of the Republic, tax administrator, and respected academic,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.
“Accordingly, I have submitted to Cabinet a bill for the renaming of universities, which includes the proposal to rename UHAS as the ‘Professor J.E.A. Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences’.”
The renaming, the Minister emphasized, is part of broader efforts to honour national icons and their legacies in Ghana’s education sector.
In addition to the renaming announcement, the Minister also assured the University’s leadership of government support in addressing infrastructure deficits and financial challenges.
“I have directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to collaborate with the University to ensure the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects, as part of this year’s GETFund interventions,” he said.
“I am also aware of UHAS’s outstanding legacy debts. Some allocations have been made to support public universities in addressing these financial burdens,” the Minister added.
The proposed renaming has been welcomed by stakeholders as a fitting tribute to the late President Mills, who was widely admired for his commitment to education and national development.
