Residents in the communities being affected by the recurring sea destructions have mounted a roadblock to prevent vehicular movement on the Keta-Aflao road.
Their action is in protest against what they describe as government’s delay in commencing work on Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defense Project.
The protest comes in the wake of another incident which occurred on Sunday and also, Monday afternoon pulling down many more housing structures as many more residents are displaced.
The latest incident has also caused extensive damage to the Keta-Aflao road impeding vehicular movement along the stretch.
The protest which is currently ongoing has halted the movement of vehicles on the stretch -leaving motorists and passengers stranded.
“We want government to act fast. Since the President visited the area some two months ago, we are yet to hear anything from the government,” an angry resident told 3news.
“We are appealing to the President and his government not to forget us because we have lost everything. Our livelihoods are gone, our homes taken away by the sea. We are angry but we still look up to the President to keep his promise,” another resident identified as Gideon said.
Since 2012, hundreds of homes in Salakope, Amutinu and Agavedzi have been washed away by the sea.
The recurring disaster has left thousands of residents displaced as several victims desert the area for safer homes in nearby communities.
A good number of the victims are also being housed in temporary structures erected by government.
In March this year, President Mahama made an emergency visit to the affected communities to assess the extent of damage and promised government’s commitment to provide a lasting solution to the menace.
The President in effect, announced his government’s intention to commence work on the Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defense Project to offer protection to the communities.
But several weeks after, nothing significant has been heard on the part of government in relation to the commencement of the project.
Yet, since the President’s visit, many houses have been destroyed as the destruction along the Keta lagoon continues.
