The Institute of Community Sustainability (ICS) respectfully calls on PresidentJohn Dramani Mahama to consider a bold and transformative step toward easing road congestion and reducing traffic-related accidents: the introduction of a sustainable river and sea transport system.
Ghana’s coastal and riverine geography offers immense potential for water-based transport.
“By utilizing our rivers and coastline, we can significantly alleviate the pressure on our road networks, which are currently overwhelmed with traffic and frequent accidents,” a statement issued by Eric Jerry Aidoo, Executive Director, Institute of Community Sustainability said.
They propose the development of a passenger boat system that connects key towns such as Retail, Tema, James Town, Senya, Winneba, Apam, Saltpond, Cape Coast, and Takoradi.
This transport alternative would be cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly beneficial for students, traders, and attendees of events across these towns, the statement said.
“In addition to being a practical solution to traffic woes, this initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals and would create jobs, stimulate local economies, and enhance regional connectivity.
“We urge the former President and all relevant stakeholders to consider this innovative approach as part of Ghana’s broader transportation and sustainability strategy,” the statement stressed.
