In a decisive move, all 27 assembly members of Chereponi have confirmed Amadu Sheini as the District Chief Executive (DCE).
The affirmation comes in the wake of a contentious election process for the presiding member that was resolved peacefully. Regional Minister Ibrahim Tia emphasized the importance of local youth embracing postings within their district for meaningful development.
The Chereponi District Assembly achieved a significant milestone with the unanimous confirmation of Amadu Sheini as the DCE, a nominee appointed by President John Dramani Mahama.
Every assembly member, 27 in total, cast their votes in favor of Sheini, signaling a strong collective endorsement despite prior disagreements related to the election of the presiding member.
The process for selecting the presiding member was marked by contention, as two candidates competed for the position.
One candidate secured 17 votes, while the other received 10. According to the Constitution, a candidate must obtain at least 19 votes two-thirds of the assembly’s total votes to win the election. This discrepancy led to significant controversy among assembly members and party supporters, creating a potentially volatile situation.
To defuse the escalating tensions, the candidate who had received 17 votes chose to withdraw from the race, allowing the candidate with 10 votes to run unopposed. This strategic decision was aimed at fostering peace within the assembly. Ultimately, the candidate who contested unopposed received 100% of the votes, further solidifying the assembly’s commitment to unity.
During the swearing-in ceremony for Amadu Sheini, Regional Minister Ibrahim Tia addressed the assembly and the citizens of Chereponi, encouraging local youth to accept postings within their own district.
Tia highlighted that many young people are often swayed by external influences to seek opportunities elsewhere, urging them to instead advocate for and contribute to the development of Chereponi.
The assembly’s unanimous decision to confirm Amadu Sheini as DCE, in conjunction with the peaceful resolution of the presiding member’s election, reflects a dedication to collaboration and advancement within the district.
