Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has reaffirmed his determination to clinch a trophy with the senior national team.
Ghana’s last trophy win was in 1982, and despite reaching the AFCON finals in 1992, 2010, and 2015, the team has struggled to bring home the coveted prize.
Following consecutive AFCON group stage exits in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament for the first time in two decades.
Amidst criticism and disappointment, Ayew rallied the team, leading them to consecutive wins against Chad and Madagascar during the March internationals in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Matchdays 5 and 6.
In a recent interview with Leicester City media team, the former Crystal Palace striker expressed his unwavering commitment to hard work and patience, holding onto hope that his perseverance will eventually be rewarded with a trophy.
“I’ve been waiting for a national team trophy for many years. I have to keep pushing, and if it comes, it comes,” he said.
The March international wins have catapulted the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 15 points, with a commanding three points lead.
Ghana would be hoping to wrap their World Cup qualifying hopes in the September internationals when the four time AFCON winners face Chad and Mali.
Jordan Ayew’s resolve to end Ghana’s trophy drought could galvanize his teammates, instilling hope that they might finally bring glory to the nation and cement their own status as national heroes.
