Director General of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Maj. Rtd. Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon has said NADMO is prepared for any unforeseen disaster during the rainy season.
Over the years, Ghana has recorded myriads of floods and other disasters during rainy seasons, prompting the public to question government’s effort in preventing these unfortunate incidents.
Dr. Kuyon noted that NADMO is aware of the usual floods which occur during rainy seasons and has set up measures to combat the incidence should there be flood this year.
“NADMO is ready and very ready because we know it is going to be a very difficult period for us. Rainy seasons often comes with their incidence so before it comes, we prepare and get ourselves ready for it.
“We don’t wait until flood comes before. We do a lot of things before if it has to happen,” he stated.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, April 13, 2025, he said as part of efforts to control flooding situations, NADMO liaises with the Ghana Meteorological Service and the Hydrological Service to be briefed with information about what is likely to happen during rainy seasons.
“Once the information is pointing to the fact that, this is how the trend is going to be, we put in place our preparation. For instance, getting the staff and the response unit ready to react should there be an incident and preparing the equipment to be used should there be an incidence,” he added.
NADMO boss stressed that physical preparation is also required in dealing with the disasters.
“For instance, if it is flooding that we are expecting, what are some of the things that we can do to help us so we look at desilting and dredging of water bodies and drains.
“Conscientizing the people’s mind especially the staff that are supposed to combat these disasters when it happens,” Dr. Kuyon said.
