Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed his disinterest towards the selection of players for the Black Stars, emphasizing that the team’s composition should be based solely on talent, regardless of whether players are based locally or abroad.
Speaking after watching a Division One League match between Attram De Visser and Hohoe United at the Tuba Astro Turf on Friday, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency stressed that identifying and nurturing the best talent available for the senior national team should be the key focus.
Despite calls for more local players to be included in the national team, Adams reiterated that his priority is the quality of players representing Ghana.
“For me, whether local or foreign-based players, I do not really care. If your best are foreign-based, if they are local, use them, train them, and let them reach the standard you want,” he said.
The minister also revealed plans to boost sports development nationwide.
“We are going to make sure we invest in all phases. I’m not fixated on local or foreign players. What we want is to ensure that whatever material you have, you train them, pick the best, and let the best represent the country. That’s all I look for,” he added.
During the March showpiece, Ghana made a significant stride towards clinching a 2026 World Cup ticket after defeating Chad and Madagascar to surge to the summit of Group I.
Otto Addo picked three local talents among the 25-man squad, and Benjamin Asare, who manned the goal for the four-time African Cup of Nations champions, made a strong pitch for why home-based players should be given opportunities after keeping successive clean sheets for the Black Stars on his senior national team debut.
