Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor has called on the people of Bawku to end the deadly conflict they are engaged in.
He reminded them that development cannot take place in Bawku when there is conflict.
“My prayer to the young people of Bawku is that even in law, a time comes that litigation ends, a time comes when conflicts or disagreements must end.
“We should aspire to peaceful coexistence and progress. When there is conflict and insecurity, roads cannot be fixed, electricity connections to communities cannot be done, traders won’t bring their wares and goods because of fear of being attacked and killed, teachers cannot be transferred there,” the South Dayi lawmaker said on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday April 12.
On Friday, April 11, President John Dramani Mahama condemned the renewed conflict in Bawku and revealed that the peace process, led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will resume next week.
Speaking at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, the President assured of his government’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku enclave.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flash point is the Bawku area. Only two days ago, a situation that took place in the market triggered an unfortunate loss of life and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasise that nobody gains from this conflict and insecurities,” he said.
He noted that the mediation process initiated by the Asantehene, which brought all key stakeholders together to find lasting solution to the conflict remains the best route.
“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which has all the stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi to ensure a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he stated.
On Thursday, April 10, violent clashes between the police and some youth, reportedly resulted in deaths and injuries. The private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga was also allegedly set ablaze during the chaos.
